World Cup 2010… here we go

And so the FIFA world cup starts and with that reasonable men turn into couch-hugging, beer-chugging idiots that scream at the television at any moment that seems right.

On the up-side:  the town centre will be a lot quieter for the next month.  And getting to the open water swimming won't be as difficult.  And riding my bike in the afternoons will probably also be slightly less dangerous, or more, depending on how you look at it.  People might now try to hit me regardless as they rush towards home.  Or they may not be on the roads at all.

A weekend of swim/bike/run/die lies ahead as I get ready to hit the ground running on Monday.  Life is good.

Working hard, hardly Working

This week is testing.

Tonight I'm doing my swim test and tomorrow my run test and on the weekend, the bike is winking at me, because it knows what is coming.

When I look at test week schedules, my mind always convinces me that they are really recovery weeks, because I'm doing so much less than I'm used to.  The week's hours drop from 12 to 6 and I generally feel like I'm doing very little.

After Monday's ride to the gym, I'm looking forward to doing that again today, as long as the fog clears up and visibility increases.  I can almost feel something hit me because they can't see me.  With my luck, it'll be a truck on its way to drop a cement load.

I realised that yesterday was the exact "2 months to go" until Outlaw and there's still a bit of work to do!

And the Rain Came Down

Yesterday afternoon I was due to get myself to the pool and get a swim in. I packed my clothes early in the morning to ensure that I could take it with me to work and I could get to the pool straight after work.

As luck would have it, I felt a bit more energetic after work and decided to bike to the gym. Nothing wrong with this when there is no rain in sight. Of course, I ignored the dark clouds in the distance and after packing the necessary clothes in a bag, together with a lock to keep the bike secure, I headed off on the nice 15 mile bike ride.

The ride is full of ups and downs and you can choose whether you want a relatively flat ride, a flat ride with one steep hill or a steady climb up towards where you want to be. I chose the steady climb and off I went. Various cars passed me and one attempted to ride me in the bushes. Normally I would shake a fist at the offending motorist, but yesterday I just wasn't in the mood.

About two miles from the gym the heavens opened. Within seconds I was completely soaked and felt a little like what I imagine a wet dog would feel like. A wet dog that still had to go for a swim. If it hadn't been that I had to swim, I probably would have called it a day right there and then and called the husband to fetch me in a hurry. Thankfully swimming involves getting wet and I could just go inside and have my swim without moping around.

After the swim Peg-leg was kind enough to pick me up – I had absolutely no wish to get back into my wet cycling clothes and since I had some jeans in the bag that were relatively dry, those were my first option. Never mind that I had forgotten to pack some shoes. Me and my bare feet were quite happy to wait until Peg-leg got to the gym and then went home.

The next few weeks should be quite a bit of fun – 9 weeks until Outlaw and I'm definitely looking forward to this one!

Cannondale Slice 105

Yesterday afternoon, after struggling to find time and place and everything in-between to get some riding done on the new bike, I finally gave up, set it up on the turbo and tried doing an aero ride for 1 hour while having Alice in Wonderland playing on the television. It was raining in the most horrendous of ways - hard and uncontrollable and so much that trying to bike in that weather would probably have resulted in <over-dramatic>me crashing and waking up unable to remember my name and then I would’ve wandered the earth looking for my place all over again</over-dramatic>.

This morning of course, the sun is out, even if there are some dark clouds looming in the distance.

I’m sat inside, having had a night of tossing and turning, considering going for a swim, even if now it is too late to go until this afternoon.

Training kicked into a new gear, or shall I say, start, yesterday. Its about time. I now only have 9 weeks to ensure that I can finish the Outlaw with a smile - there just never is a doubt that I’ll finish. I’ll just have to walk if I can’t run.

Speaking of which, fundraiser time has kicked in.

This year, I’m raising funds for the Midlands Air Ambulance Charity.

You can find my fundraising page here: http://www.justgiving.com/IronKarin

Midlands Air Ambulance Charity is responsible for funding and operating three Air Ambulances serving the Midlands and Welsh border region. Flying its first mercy mission in 1991, the organisation is regarded as one of the longest established and busiest Air Ambulance operators in the UK.

It is not always fully appreciated that Midlands Air Ambulance is funded solely by the public and local businesses. They receive no government money or National Lottery funding. The generosity of the public helps to raise the £6 million required each year to ensure our three helicopters remain operational, so please consider making a donation.

Comrades Marathon… 2011??

This past weekend the Comrades marathon took place in South Africa - this year it was a down run, which is allegedly the more gruelling between the up and down run and tend to work quite hard on your knees and legs (I’m not sure I’d be able to tell the difference after running 89km!!).

Once I knew that a friend of mine had finished, I phoned my mom to chat to her about this and that and then she hit me with this bomb :

Let’s run the Comrades marathon next year.

Excuse me?
I’m still thinking about my next Iron distance tri - and she wants me to think about Comrades next year?
Sure, I want to do it... at some point.
Sure, I’d love to do it with a qualifying time that isn’t “finish Ironman South Africa”

So, here goes. I’m supposed to ensure that I run a sub-5:00 marathon somewhere between now and next year April ... and get my entry in at some point.

Juneathon 2010

Blogging while away from home is hard.  Especially when you know you have to do it because of the fact that you decided to take part in something like Juneathon.

Excuse the short little blog posts that might appear for the next month.  I'll try and do a proper update at least once a week :)
